Mothers' Union

The Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation that promotes the well-being of families world wide.

The Mothers’ Union goes back a long way in Castleknock. The following is an extract from the records: “An inaugural meeting was held on April 19th 1905 in Castleknock Schoolhouse when Lady Bewley kindly gave an interesting and instructive address on the work of the Mothers’ Union. The Lady Holmpatrick kindly consented to act as President and Mrs O’Hara Mease as Hon. Sec. of the new branch and Lady Brooke, Lady Chamberlain, the Hon. Mrs. Ernest Guinness and Mrs. Rathborne were elected to form a Committee.”

In 1906 it was reported that the branch was in a flourishing condition. There were 24 members.

Sadly, at some time the members ceased to meet regularly and the Branch closed but in 1961 was re-opened by Mrs. Rhoda Neill, wife of the rector at that time and mother of our Archbishop. We have a great deal to thank Mrs Neill for as many in our parish have benefited from the friendship and support of the Mothers’ Union.

The Purpose of the Mothers’ Union is to be specially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life. The Aim of the society is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.

Membership of the Mothers’ Union is open to all who have been baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity and who declare their support for the Aim and Objectives of the society.

On Monday 6th September the Opening Service with enrolment of new members will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Clonsilla at 8 p.m. We will have supper after the service in the church and will have time to catch up on the summer news and hear about the varied programme the committee and representatives have organised for the coming session.

You will be most welcome to join us at this service or at any of the meetings throughout the year. The meetings will be publicised on the Sunday Announcement Sheet.

The Chairperson of the Branch is Muriel Kellett.

Valerie Greene - Hon. Secretary
