Boys' Brigade News

Anchor Boys
Anchor boys are looking forward to another action packed programme of fun, games and crafts.

Junior Section
All of the boys completed their achievements for 2004. To end the year we had a great night bowling in the Leisureplex with strikes galore. We also had a great turnout for the annual indoor football competition in DCU with sixteen boys playing on three teams. Well done to Robert, David, Elvin, Andrew, Thomas and James who reached the third place playoff.

Company Section
Company Section helped with the decoration of Santa’s Grotto for the Parish Annual Christmas Fair. Once again the bookstall manned by the 10th Dublin exceeded the previous year’s total with €1,308 raised for parish funds.

Mother's Union

We had a most interesting and informative evening in December when our speaker was local man, Paddy Coyle, and the topic was Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. He was accompanied by Lilia and her guide dog, Fee. Paddy told us about the intensive training of the dogs, the placing of the dogs with sight impaired people and the ongoing fund raising to maintain the level of support in providing dogs etc. Lilia told us of some of her personal experiences since she lost her sight and we marvelled at how well she copes with help from Fee.

Some members thoroughly enjoyed a pre-Christmas outing to hear the Seafield Singers give of their best at their annual Christmas concert. It put us in the mood for what we hope was a happy time for everyone.

Our January meeting was a workshop led by Lesley Anders on the Mothers’ Union “Switched On” programme of Media Awareness for Families. Do films, soaps, news, video games, the internet and radio stations encourage or inhibit relationships in the home? The facts and figures which were available were quite astounding and gave us food for thought. We need to make the most of the opportunities offered by the media, so that it becomes a useful tool and not a dominant force.

Everyday life brings sadness and joy - we offer our sincere sympathy to Beatrice Richards and Valerie Jameson on the loss of their fathers-in-law during December. Pam Caffrey, while not an enrolled member of Mothers’ Union, often joined us for branch meetings and outings and we are sorry to record her death too. We offer our hearty congratulations to Granny, Pat Gray, Edith Nuzum, and to Jane on the safe arrival of Timothy to the Hastie household.

The Knit-Ins for Simon Accessories have started again. Watch out for details on the Announcement Sheets.

February meeting: Monday7 th - A talk on Reiki - if you are interested, please come.

Tiny Tots

The Annual Beetle Drive will take place on Friday 11th February 2005 at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Centre. Following last year’s success, there will be Junior and Senior games to give all ages a fair chance. Adults €5 and Children €4.

There will be a raffle on the night, tickets available at 20c each or a strip of 5 for €1 from Tiny Tots members. Donations of prizes would be most welcome: please contact any of the Tiny Tots Committee.

The proceeds from the Beetle Drive will go towards the Clonsilla Project.

Girls' Brigade

We finished up for Christmas with a visit from Santa on Saturday 13th December, who brought presents for everyone. On Wednesday 15th December, we had chips and soft drinks for the older girls.

We are back after a welcome break and are working hard towards our PE competitions and Scripture exams, both to be held at the end of February.

Castleknock National School

Our Christmas Season was hectic as usual. The School Carol Service on 12th December was enjoyed by pupils and parents alike. Thanks to the P.A. for organising refreshments on the day.

First, Second and Third Classes performed in their annual concert on 15th December, creating a great buzz around the School.

Senior pupils went carol singing to Blanchardstown Hospital, much to the appreciation of the patients.

Santa visited us on the last day of term with presents for everyone.

Special Duties Post: Hazel Thompson has been appointed to the Special Duties Post from September 2004.

Operation Christmas Child: Once again the children excelled in filling approximately ninety boxes destined for children in the former Yugoslavian Republics.

Childline: A big thank you to Michelle Ryan for organising Kellogg's Breakfast in aid of Childline. The children got a fine breakfast and Childline got €355 so it was a great success.

Thank you to Andrew Glen Craigie for once again tidying up the front borders and flower beds. As ever, we welcome interesting visitors to talk to the pupils.
