Boys' Brigade News

Anchor Boys
The anchor boys had great fun on Shrove Tuesday when they all got to mix and cook their own pancake. There were some great shapes and flavours and definitely some budding chefs for the future. After half term, we are ready to go full steam ahead preparing for the display.

Janet Seaman

Junior Section
Junior section boys have been working hard preparing for the Figure Marching competition in February. This year, we will have two teams in the competition. The boys have also been practising their badminton and skipping skills, as well as indoor hockey and football.

Bernard Sheridan

Company Section
Two teams were entered in the recent five-a-side soccer blitz held at DCU recently. While not winning the competition, the boys had a wonderful time. We are now working on the J. W. Morgan Scripture course and getting our thoughts together for our 16th Annual Display in April.

Laurence O’Reilly

Annual Supper Dance
Leaders of the 10th Dublin would like to thank all those who kindly supported our Annual Supper Dance, either by buying tickets or donating spot prizes. Everyone had a wonderful night and a whopping great €1,400 was raised.

Girls' Brigade

The New Year started with the Modern Dance Competition. This is quite different to our usual style and the girls really enjoyed it. It is open to Seniors and Brigaders and we were able to enter each section. We had two Senior and two Brigader teams and they performed very well on the night. Thanks are due to Orla Murphy for teaching the senior teams – this was her first year for teaching; and to Sandi Kenny for teaching the Brigader teams.

The National Competitions will take place at the end of February, followed by the District Competitions in early March.

Mothers' Union

For our February meeting Ida McIntosh introduced us to Reiki and members participated in a discussion following her talk.

March and April are two very full months for Mothers’ Union members. On Thursday 3rd March, members are encouraged to attend Christ Church Cathedral for the monthly Holy Communion service. Other branches attend also and afterwards there is a time for coffee and a chat.

Our Branch meeting is on Monday 7th March and we will show videos of Mothers’ Union work overseas. Our overseas boxes and “film” boxes are due back at that meeting and we hope they will yield a generous amount to help with overseas work.

On Palm Sunday members will help to organise the Parish Hunger Lunch.

After the service on the Monday of Holy Week, members and others are invited to take part in a “Water Walk”. Bottles of water, which members will bring to the church, will be transported by some of our men folk to the Phoenix Monument in the Park. We will walk to the Monument, pick up the bottles of water and then walk back to the church carrying the water. The idea of the walk is to make us appreciate how well off we are to have running water at the turn of a tap when our fellow members in Africa have to walk miles to collect their water.

The Annual General Meeting with elections will be held on Monday 4th April and we will also have our annual cake/home produce sale in aid of the Rector’s Discretionary Fund.

On Tuesday 19 th April we will commemorate the inaugural meeting of Mothers’ Union in these Parishes with a service of thanksgiving in St. Brigid’s. We hope that parishioners and anyone who was connected with Mothers’ Union now living outside the parish will join us on that evening.

The last event of April will be a visit by our link Branch, Holywood, on Saturday 23rd.

Castleknock National School

Our Christmas Season was hectic as usual. The School Carol Service on 12th December was enjoyed by pupils and parents alike. Thanks to the P.A. for organising refreshments on the day.

First, Second and Third Classes performed in their annual concert on 15th December, creating a great buzz around the School.

Senior pupils went carol singing to Blanchardstown Hospital, much to the appreciation of the patients.

Santa visited us on the last day of term with presents for everyone.

Special Duties Post: Hazel Thompson has been appointed to the Special Duties Post from September 2004.

Operation Christmas Child: Once again the children excelled in filling approximately ninety boxes destined for children in the former Yugoslavian Republics.

Childline: A big thank you to Michelle Ryan for organising Kellogg's Breakfast in aid of Childline. The children got a fine breakfast and Childline got €355 so it was a great success.

Thank you to Andrew Glen Craigie for once again tidying up the front borders and flower beds. As ever, we welcome interesting visitors to talk to the pupils.
