Also congratulations to Keith and Wendy Kelly on the birth of Samantha Erin, a sister for Michael, on 24th January 2005; and to Melanie and Garland Drake on the birth of Torin Charles Joseph on 25th February 2005. Memorial Service: On 14th January, staff of the Local Government Computer Services Board gathered at St Brigid’s to remember their late colleague Colin Smith. It was a moving service, with beautiful singing by Loraine Melia. In Memoriam: James Louis Hilton, late of Ashfield Lawn, Mulhuddart (5th April 1934 - 13th February 2005). At his funeral in St Brigid’s church on 16th February, the Curate spoke of how Jimmy’s life had been filled with love. It was love that brought him to Ireland: he met Carol in East Anglia over 40 years ago when he was in the Royal Air Force, and romantically eloped to Ireland so they could be together and marry. A loving family man, with seven children, and then the arrival of the 21 grandchildren, Jimmy worked hard all his life to support his family: in the early days, when money was tight, walking into town to work at the Corporation Fruit Market; in the heavy snow of 1982, Jimmy insisted on digging through 6 feet of snow to be able to make his way into work, only to find that no one else was in sight and everything was closed! He didn’t ever take a day off sick in all those years. Jimmy was a loving friend and neighbour, a man with a big heart; he was there for everyone; he would get treats for the children of a neighbour who he knew didn’t have much; he would always offer lifts to people – there are family memories of the poor children in the town centre who couldn’t afford the bus fare, walking past the market on their way to school, and Jimmy would give them a lift. He would always do a good turn if he could. Jimmy’s passions included Norwich (his home town’s football team), his cars and his darts (which he won trophies for), his crossword every morning, and Emmerdale. And Jimmy loved the natural world, God’s creation. He photographed his flowers, fed the birds, and was a very keen angler – usually going fishing in the canal early on a Sunday morning after 5 or 6 days’ work – but keeping the fish in water to release them in the pond that used to be at Corduff “to save them from the pike”. Not an overtly religious man, Jimmy nevertheless valued the clergy visits in hospital, where he died peacefully after six weeks in Intensive Care. We extend our deepest sympathy to James’ family, especially his wife Carol, his children Sammy, Debbie, Karen, Tricia, Seamus, Melanie and Paddy, their spouses and partners, his 21 grand-children, and his sisters Ann and Mary in England. Please remember them all in your prayers. |
