Boys' Brigade News

Recent events
As the year draws to a close and after a very successful Display, our Company Section and Junior Section are looking forward to their weekend away on 6-8th May in River Valley Caravan Park in Redcross, Co Wicklow.

Each year we see leader retirements and this year we say “farewell” to Janet Seaman (ABL) who has given eight years of sterling service. Her creative talents will be sorely missed but she has offered to assist the Company in the ‘back office,’ so it really isn’t a “Good Bye”. A beautiful John Rocha bowl was presented to her by the Chaplain on behalf of the parents and company. Full awards list will be printed in next month’s magazine.

Our 17th Annual Display was held on Friday 15th April. Once again the boys put on a splendid show ranging from the Anchor Bear Hunt to the Junior Section Boxercise and the Company Section doing their very own Rose of Castleknock with our special guest Ryan Tubbercurry. We were delighted to have Mr. Hal McGuckin as our Inspecting Officer who emphasised the need for new leaders. We were honoured to have Mrs. Olive Wilkinson (Principal-Castleknock NS) to present the prizes.

Our Anchor Boys had a wonderful outing to ENRG Play Centre on Saturday 23rd April.

Looking Ahead
On Sunday 29th May, Company Section boys Robert Beattie and Conor Doyle will be confirmed by Archbishop John Neill in St. Brigid’s Church, Castleknock, and we hold both boys and their families in our prayers.

Finally, my time has come to an end as coordinator of the 10th Dublin and on behalf of Ada, myself and the boys I want to thank all the leaders of the 10th Dublin both past and present for their friendship, support and their constant willingness to help. It has been a pleasure to have worked with so many boys and parents over the past 16 years and I wish the 10th Dublin the very best in the years ahead.

Robert Lawson

A note from Janet Seaman:
Many thanks to all involved in the Boys’ Brigade for the beautiful John Rocha bowl presented to me on my retirement as a BB leader. I look back on my eight years as a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. I have got to know so many people and made some great friends.

Girls' Brigade

We were very disappointed that the All Ireland Finals to be held in Belfast in March were cancelled. We qualified for two of these competitions and it was only the night before they were due to take place that they were cancelled.

Our Brigaders had a lesson in makeup this month and the results were very good! Rachel came up from Tipperary with baby Tom to give this lesson and there was no shortage of minders!

Our Display was held on Friday 29th April; we now look forward to a well-earned break for the summer. If there are any new girls interested in joining please contact Sally Darlington. We will reopen in September. Thank you to all who helped throughout the year.

Mothers' Union

“Husbands of Mothers’ Union members found kerb crawling in the Phoenix Park!”
No, this was not an illegal offence. David and Eddie were providing much appreciated minding while we walked to and from the Phoenix monument on our Water Walk. We thank Rev. Sandra for being with us and for her prayers of thanksgiving for our plentiful supply of water on tap that we take so much for granted. Thank you too to Muriel for her hospitality yet again at the end of the walk.

We held our Annual General Meeting on 4th April and 31 members attended. The Rector chaired the meeting. Muriel Kellett gave her report which detailed the many events of the past session. Shirley Smyth gave the financial report and the other representatives also gave reports on the year’s business and events. As this was the end of a triennial there were appointments and elections. The Rector appointed Hilary Nason as chairperson and she nominated Avril Hollingsworth as Treasurer and Valerie Greene as Secretary. Susan Green, Lorna Hendy, Lesley Anders, Stella Obe and Sandra Connolly were elected to the committee; other representatives are Valerie Jameson for Enterprise/ Literature, Rom Olusa for Prayer & Spirituality, Jane Hastie for Overseas, Ada Lawson for North Area and Edith Nuzum for Hospital Visitor. Representatives to Diocesan Council and to Young Members will be decided at the initial meeting of the new committee.

The Rector, on behalf of members, made a presentation to Muriel and thanked her for her three years of truly dedicated work to Mothers’ Union in the Branch. Valerie Greene, on behalf of members, made a presentation to Rev. Sandra Pragnell as she prepares to move to become Rector in the Dundalk group of parishes. We wish Sandra well and thank her for her contribution to Mothers’ Union here.

Following the business of the evening, supper was served and trading was brisk at the Bring & Buy cake sale in aid of the Rector’s Discretionary Fund.

The North Dublin Area Service will be held on Monday 9th May 2005 in Finglas and the preacher will be our Diocesan Chaplain, Rev. Paul Houston.

A reminder to members of the Outing on Saturday 14th May. Full details will be circulated in due course (if you haven’t already got them).

Valerie Greene

The Chairperson, Mrs. Muriel Kellett, would like to thank whoever left the beautiful tulips at her hall door.

Youth Club

A Target Bowls night was held on Saturday 23rd April for teenagers in our parishes.  This was initially a fact finding night to see if any one was interested in starting up a new youth club. There was a positive response: eighteen teenagers turned up!  Lots of well thought out ideas for events were listed and a keen interest was shown in getting a committee set up as soon as possible.  This new youth club will be run by the teenagers themselves. Parents’ support will also be required to make the club a success. If you are interested in learning more, contact Charles Seaman or Ruby Bannister.
