Mothers Union 100 Year Celebration Service

Following months of planning and much hard work, we finally celebrated the inaugural meeting of our Branch Mothers’ Union that was held on 19th April 1905.

On 19th April 2005 we welcomed the Archbishop whose mother, Mrs. Rhoda Neill, re-opened Mothers’ Union in 1961, to preach at the service of Thanksgiving. We were joined by our Diocesan President, Mrs. June Wilkinson, by All Ireland Vice President Mrs. Janet Crampton representing Mrs. Paddy Wallace, All Ireland President, by Mrs. Dorothy McMurthy, North Area President, by Diocesan Vice Presidents, by past Diocesan Presidents, by past Branch chairpersons, by members from nearly all the Branches within the Diocese, by our own past members who have moved on for many different reasons, one coming from Holland, another from England and another from Co. Offaly, by our rector, Rev. Andrew Orr, who compiled the service, by our curate, Rev. Sandra Pragnell, by our lay reader, Mr. Robert Lawson, by Rev. Kenneth Sherwood, who served in these parishes as auxiliary priest, by Rev. Margaret Gilbert, Diocesan Vice President, by Rev. Susan Green and Rev. Aisling Shine, both branch members, by vestry members, by parishioners and by friends.

The church was beautifully decorated with floral arrangements for the occasion. Mrs. Pat Gray carried the Branch Banner and during the service minutes of the inaugural meeting were read, deceased members and friends were remembered in prayer, symbols representing Mothers’ Union were brought forward and a collection was taken for the work of the Mothers’ Union overseas. There was much lay participation in the service and many who attended commented afterwards on how uplifting the service was.

Celebrations continued after the service in the Parish Centre where supper was served to the 184 strong congregation and speeches were made by the Rector, by Muriel Kellett, our present chairperson, by the Archbishop, by June Wilkinson and by Janet Crampton. Dorothy Robinson reminisced on past years in the branch and then made a presentation to the Archbishop of a book entitled Blanchardstown, Castleknock and the Park, hopefully reminding him of the area where he had spent some of his earlier years. Rom Olusa presented a basket of flowers to Mrs. Neill. A celebration cake was cut by three past chairpersons Pat Gray, Anne Boyland and Ada Lawson, and by present chairperson Muriel Kellett.

Before and since the event we have received many letters and cards of congratulations on this anniversary. We will compile a scrap book of all the printed material and photographs so that those following on will read and know what a truly memorable occasion it was.
