As you may be aware, the Principal and longest serving teacher of CNS, Olive Wilkinson, is retiring in June. While we will be marking this briefly at the school closing service on June 19 th, the main presentation to her will be at an evening in Westmanstown Golf Club on Friday 9 th September, to which all past pupils, past parents and parents are warmly invited.
We need to know how many will be attending on this night, so we are asking everyone wants to be there to let the Parish Office know no later than June 24th. You are also invited to make a donation to the presentation fund to mark Olive’s 28 years as teacher and two years as Principal. Please make cheques payable to “ Castleknock National School.” We look forward to seeing you in September. ConfirmationOn Sunday 29th May 2005 the following were confirmed by the Archbishop: Thinus Barnard, Robert Beattie, Conor Doyle, Alison Hollingsworth, Matthew Lowe, Madonna Nkala, Emy Nkemena and Sarah Wickham. Book ReviewCompanion to the Church Hymnal This mammoth book gives the background to every hymn in the new 5th edition of the Church Hymnal, published in 2002. Here you can discover the fascinating history of the great hymn writers such as Charles Wesley, George Herbert and John Newton, as well as newer authors like Graham Kendrick. It’s a great resource, the fruit of years of research by Bishop Edward Darling and Donald Davison who have meticulously accounted for every one of the 700+ hymns. Months of fascinating browsing are in its covers. Copies are on sale at the Sunday School Society’s resource centre in Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines, at €25.00, or ask to have a look at the Parish Office copy. Letter from the Rector of the Parochial Group of Dundalk, Heynestown Union, Ballymascanlan Union, and Creggan - May 05Greetings to you all from this beautiful part of the country (north Co Louth and south Co Armagh)! The mountains of Mourne and Carlingford are in the distance, the sea is five minutes down the road, and there are pheasants on the lawn and the occasional brown hare! We have all, including Sam and Toby (the dogs) and Parsley and Coco (the cats), settled in well and it’s hard to believe that I have only been here a week and a half! I’ve already done my first Baptism, one nursing home and three hospital visits, am planning three weddings, and currently am working through the list of those who are housebound (which seems to keep growing). Tomorrow is my first Vestry meeting. But everyone is very welcoming and it feels like home.
However, I can’t forget the wonderful four years I shared with you in Castleknock and Mulhuddart with Clonsilla, and with this letter I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your many kindnesses and your amazing generosity to me when I left. Many have sent cards and letters and good wishes, and there have been personal gifts, all of which I deeply appreciate. But the formal presentations at my last Sunday services were quite overwhelming. You will be pleased to know that the computer accessories are installed and up and running; the willow tree is happily planted (in a very large pot at present); the gorgeous table lamps fit the colour scheme of my “quiet room” perfectly; and the very generous cheques will enable me to fulfil an ambition to acquire a proper set of dining chairs for my hunt table (and I have a large dining room to accommodate them). It feels good to be here, but I am also glad that you are all less than an hour away. So I do hope not to lose touch. Strategically placed halfway between Dublin and Belfast (not to mention Holywood), the Rectory is the obvious place to break your journey. And if you can stay longer, there are five lovely churches to visit, not to mention the unspoilt countryside and coast. I will be keeping you all in my prayers. God bless. Sandra. Letter from Elaine Dunne - Curate ElectDear Parishioners I am delighted to have been appointed as curate-assistant in the Parishes of Castleknock and Mulhuddart with Clonsilla. I am very much looking forward to getting to know all of you. I’ve been asked to write a piece about my background for the parish magazine – so let me introduce myself. I am from Portmarnock and have been a parishioner of Malahide Parish for a number of years. I have been involved in various parish groups such as our worship, faith development, ecumenical and youth groups. I have also been Rector’s Churchwarden and I was a member of the Select Vestry for a number of years. In addition to this, I’ve also been involved in activities in Christchurch Cathedral and in Trinity College Chapel. I have been a full-time student to date, and have studied at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth and also at the Irish School of Ecumenics, where I’m currently finishing an M.Litt. Degree. I was accepted for training in the Church of Ireland Theological College in June 2003 and began my studies there the following September. During my time in College, I have been student reader in Holmpatrick Parish and I also spent a month working in St. Pancras Parish, London, last summer. I enjoy most sports (especially football!!!), cycling, scouts and travelling. I am looking forward to embarking on the next stage of my life and spiritual journey working alongside all of you in Castleknock, Mulhuddart and Clonsilla.
