USPG is an Anglican mission agency with a successful 300-year track record of enabling people to grow spiritually, to thrive physically and to have a voice in an unjust world. We do this in partnership with churches around the world, providing the resources - people, money and ideas - that they define as necessary to meet local needs.

In 2002, the Parish decided to sponsor the St Anne’s Hospital, Liuli in Tanzania Project as a result of an address given by Karin Johnson of USPG on Mission Sunday. Here is the most up-to-date report from this project.

St Anne’s Hospital, Liuli in Tanzania

Update from USPG Project 124, February 2005

St Anne's Hospital is in a remote location on the eastern shore of Lake Malawi and serves a population of 100,000 people. The infrastructure is very limited. Many people walk for days to attend the hospital. Dr Daniel Ndimbo gives us an update.

Preventative services
It is important, as part of the training, we offer the nurses help to develop their skills. Last year we managed to send Alice Kantimbo to Mbozi Training Centre. She passed all her exams and came back to us and is now a midwife. Other staff also went for training, but as you can imagine, it is hard for us to send our precious staff away, as each nurse is really valuable to the work of St Anne's. However, by sending them off for professional training, we are ensuring that the quality of care we give our patients remains of the highest possible standard.

Hospital fence
We have successfully built a new fence around the hospital. Until recently the hospital had no protection of any kind, but with thanks to support from Friends of St Anne’s, a fence protecting the hospital has been built.

Access to the hospital
The road from Mbamba Bay to Liuli has been, in the past, very challenging. In the rainy season, it is impassable, which makes access to the hospital difficult, if not impossible. We are very pleased, though, that the construction of a good gravel surfaced road from Mbamba Bay to Liuli has now, finally, been completed. Before, even in the dry season, it would take four hours to drive from Mbamba bay to Liuli. Now the same journey is just 45 minutes. This new road is sturdy, so it is accessible even during the rainy season. With all this new work on road infrastructure, hopefully, before too long, St Anne's won't be as remote as it once was.

Although we are short of equipment, and short of staff, and often have no fresh water, while the electricity supply is off more than on, we manage to keep on treating the people. Your help through your donations and your prayers have kept us going since 1906. God bless you. We are very grateful for this and hope to keep going another 99 years!

In 2004, you raised £15,444 towards St Anne’s Hospital.
