Looking Ahead to June

The Irish Cancer Society's "Daffodil Day" Coffee Morning

On Friday March 22nd, a very pleasant coffee morning was held in the Parish Centre in aid of The Irish Cancer Society's "Daffodil Day".  882 was raised and donated to this worthwhile cause. Many thanks to all who attended, baked and supported us in anyway. We hope that this may become an annual event in our parish.

THE RECTOR WRITES

Dear Friends,

A number of charity events are coming up shortly, and we hope that you're able to give them all as much support as you can. First, you'll see elsewhere in this magazine all about Christian Aid week, which begins on Sunday 12th May and is highlighting the inequities in the system of world trade. Our service that Sunday will be on the theme of fair trade.

Meanwhile, at the time of writing we're looking forward to our intrepid cyclists setting off to Galway for their 106 mile ride in aid of St. Anne's Hospital, Liuli in Tanzania. It's great that we are able to give them all the support we can and be a major fundraiser for this hospital. So please give them all the support that you are able.

Finally, our Tiny Tots mums are once again running the Women's Mini-Marathon this time in aid of Crumlin Children's Hospital. As well as sponsorship, they're also looking for you to collect the mastheads from the Evening Herald: the more they collect, the more money the hospital receives. Contact any Tiny Tots member for details.

Pathfinders
As you'll see elsewhere in the magazine, Pathfinders are holding a ten year reunion for members past and present. Our leaders over this time, Jim and Evelyn, are retiring this year after giving us superb service. What we need now are new leaders who will help the teenagers in our parish to run their youth club. We need you! Even you've no experience in youth work, we need you to join the team…… with others who have said that they will help. We will give support and training. Please do contact me if you can help.

Congratulations to parishioner Lauren Holmes who has become the All-Ireland under 13s 60m sprint champion. A future Sonia O'Sullivan?

We were delighted to welcome President McAleese on her visit to the school recently. A great time was had by all! Full details and photos in the next issue…

Yours in His service

Andrew

Boys' Brigade

BB News by Martha Waller—Secretary

BB News:
The 14th Annual Display was a tremendous success. Well done to all our boys who participated and gave a great nights entertainment to all.

The night was marked by a presentation of an engraved tankard to Lieutenant Philip Denner who has retired. Philip has been with the 10th for 10 years (and a BB member for more years than he is willing to disclose) and has been leader of Company section for that period. We will miss him greatly as he had many leadership qualities and skills. A presentation was also made to his wife Christine and their two girls for their patience over the ten year period.

Our year was brought to a close with a Service of the Word, on Tuesday 23rd April, which was conducted by our Chaplain.

Junior Section and Company Section are looking forward to their weekend away which will take place from 10th - 12th May, 2002 at River Valley Camping and Holiday Park, Redcross, Co. Wicklow.

Youth Club Update

by Evelyn Pender

The Alton Towers trip was a terrific success. The group of 19 (12 members and 7 leaders) headed off on Saturday morning 6th April at 6:50am on a Ryanair flight into Birmingham. We had 4 cars laid on and it was over an hour's journey, in convoy, up to Staffordshire, where the theme park is located. Far from being a tacky amusement arcade (which many of the leaders had envisioned) Alton Towers is a delight, set in the grounds of a sensational old castle with beautiful trees and formal gardens. The countryside on the drive there looked lovely with wild flowers growing out of the neat hedgerows. The weather was superb which made it all the easier for driving and then queuing for our turn on the rides.

The first day the braver at heart conquered 'Oblivion' (the world's first vertical drop roller coaster) and 'Nemesis' while the more staid among us stuck with the 'Rapids' and 'Runaway Mine train' and a series of safer looking rides. That evening we headed to iLam Hall, a gothic National Trust mansion which is now a Youth Hostel and we stayed in really great accommodation. We had our dinner and then some still energetic (mad!) people played football out on the lawns until it got dark.

Sunday morning we were up, dressed, fed and back at the gates of Alton Towers by 10am. Once again the day was spent exploring the park, going on the rides, playing games of skill at the 'fairground' stalls and winning a variety of cuddly toys! This was the day for the adrenaline addicts to 'assume the position' to ride 'Air' (billed as the most terrifying roller coaster ride in Europe) and for the rest of us to catch up by trying out 'Nemesis' and 'The Black Hole'.

We headed back to the airport in great time for check-in at 8:30pm. We had a packed picnic supper together in the airport and our flight finally arrived in Dublin at 9:45pm. Overall the weekend was everything we had hoped for - thrills, no spills and the sun shone for us the whole weekend! We all came back with sun-kissed noses, happy hearts and we vowed to return again someday! Check out our website www.castleknock.dublin.anglican.org in the coming week for action photos!

Our next big event is the Pathfinders' 10 year Reunion which will take place on Sunday 28th April. If you were a past member, leader or supporter of Pathfinders', you can expect to get your invite through the letterbox soon. The evening will entail a drinks reception and finger food supper and should be a great chance to catch up with old friends, all linked through Pathfinders' Youth Club.

Regards, Evelyn

Galway Cycle Challenge in aid of USPG 3rd and 4th May 2002

David Dobson
Event Co-ordinator.

Route- Galway - Clifden- Oughterard- Galway - 106 miles

The team are now into the final month of preparation for the Galway Challenge 2002. Thighs and bottoms are continuing to firm up nicely as all cyclists clock up the training miles. Our training patch has now extended beyond the Phoenix Park and there are rumours circulating that a small number of our group were recently spotted near Navan and Trim (on the same day - incredible !). As we continually to seek our improve our pace, some members of the team have resorted to employing the latest technology available in the market place, with frequent tyre changes to low profile slick tyres now the norm. However, even with the availability of this technology, it is heartening to see that one of the more traditional members of the team, who shall remain nameless, has a liking for the more established and trusted technology, having recently fitted a double spring saddle and bell to his bicycle. Things are progressing very well on the sponsorship side, a very big thank you to everyone who has pledged their support to a very worthwhile cause. St. Anne's Hospital, Liuli, Tanzania suffers from constant funding problems and the money raised for St. Anne's from this event will help to make a difference. We will be continuing to seek support over the coming weeks. If we miss anyone wishing to support the event, please contact any member of the team to make a donation which will be greatly appreciated.

An Appreciation of Millie Jones

An Appreciation of Millie Jones [nee Allen]: Millicent Jones [Allen] or Millie as she was known, came to live in Sunnyslope, Castleknock in 1945 from Glen Heste, Co. Wicklow and became on the most prominent members of the parish.
Millie was a founder member of Castleknock Table Tennis Club and won many trophies. She was also a member of our Vestry and was a Rector's Churchwarden (the second woman!) prior to her Marriage in 1981 to William Jones from Kiltegan, Co. Wicklow. After her marriage Millie became involved in all aspects of Parish Life in Kiltegan, including becoming a lay reader and joining other organisations too numerous to mention. She was also secretary of the United Churches Table Tennis League. She was a prominent member of the Girls Friendly Society for over sixty years, examining their Craft Classes and was the first leader to receive the gold medal. She was also an expert in in hand and machine sewing and sewed for her livelihood as well as pleasure.
We would like to express our sympathy to her husband William, her brother Frank and to all her family and wider circle of friends
